Can I tell you all how excited I am for next week? The family and I are taking a much needed vacation to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Wanna know my to-do list while we’re there? Nothing! I’m just going to sit and relax on the private beach access that comes with our rental property. There is always one downside to relaxing on the beach for someone like me… I am super prone to burning, even if I coat myself in sunscreen every hour. I don’t get super burnt, but I do get slightly red.
Having dealt with this for a long time, I have learned to be prepared. I came up with this super simple to make After-Sun Skin Soother with Aloe Jelly and essential oils. It works so well to provide cooling-relief after a long day in the sun, I just had to share with all of you!
Before we get to the actual recipe, I want to discuss what kind of aloe is appropriate for this recipe. Believe it or not, there is different kinds of aloe products. There is aloe juice, aloe gel, and aloe jelly (and possibly others).
Aloe juice is a liquid and contains no solids, aloe gel is more the meat of the plant, and aloe jelly is a little bit of both with added preservatives and most importantly, thickeners and emulsifiers/surfactants. This is the type of product that you want. Without the emulsifiers/surfactants, the essential oils you add won’t mix.
Because, as we all know, water-based products and oils don’t mix. So why is it important for the oils to mix? Because you don’t want to apply undiluted essential oils to the skin. This could cause sensitization and could ultimately lead to more problems later.
Some people may decide to research this further (I hope!) and decide to try to make their own jelly. Good luck to you! I personally don’t want to risk messing it all up, so I choose to buy it pre-made. If you choose to go the same route, be careful and look at the ingredients. If it says 100% aloe vera, it’s not aloe vera jelly. Some company’s mark their aloe vera jelly as gel, so looking at the ingredient labels is important when making a decision to purchase. I personally buy mine from Plant Therapy. There is a link to it in the recipe below.
