Why be colorblind when we can be colorFULL instead?
Imani and Kayla are the best of friends who are learning to celebrate their different skin colors. As they look around them at the amazing colors in nature, they can see that their skin is another example of God's creativity! This joyful story takes a new approach to discussing race: instead of being colorblind, we can choose to celebrate each color God gave us and be colorFULL instead.
As a teacher, it comes to no surprise to me that children ask a LOT of questions. New parents, people without children, and people who don’t teach children, some of these questions may seem inappropriate. How do you answer them? A lot of times, you just explain it the best you can. It most likely feels awkward and you just wish the conversation was over. Or sometimes, you get lucky and someone writes a beautifully illustrated book. A book that makes the lessons a whole lot easier to teach. Guess what?! That’s exactly what Dorena Williamson did with the book, Colorfull.
Colorfull provides a wonderful lesson on color, and how all color is beautifully created by God. It teaches that we should appreciate all colors, all people, and all things, regardless of color. I’m not sure about everyone else, but I am of the very strong opinion that this is a MUCH needed lesson in today’s society. Written with our world’s youngest generation in mind, it’s the most powerful tool I’ve come across, aside from leading by example.
Besides from a very powerful story with beautifully illustrated pictures, Colorfull comes with a built-in discussion guide for parents and educators that allows them to dig deeper into the story with their kiddos.
